Cosmetics 'deadly' to hospital patients

Some moisturisers and body creams could be lethal to critically ill patients, a study warns. The products could contain a potentially deadly bacteria. The findings come after five intensive care patients in the same hospital were struck down with a life-threatening infection after using a body milk lotion.

Three suffered blood poisoning as a result and two got lung and urinary bugs. All the patients had used a body lotion from the hospital trolley, so the containers were sent away for testing.

They contained bacteria known to cause hospital infections which could be deadly to those with weak immune systems or some lung diseases, said the authors of the Spanish report.

Luckily, the body milk was withdrawn and the hospital in Barcelona stamped out the bug.(
